Who else wants to be found on Google Local Business Listings and Google Maps?

Many of our clients have asked us to be listed on Google Maps. We’ve seen a surge from Google in listing local business results in a typical Google Search. We took the time to research this topic and here’s what we found.

First, Google Maps (or Google Local Business Listing – we call it GLBL) is a very valuable listing. Even if you find your business listed in the GLBL especially on page 2 or further back, you should create a listing for your business.

This is because you need to be in control of what is listed for your company’s goods and services. Some of this information is derived from supersites and buy positive reviews online yellow pages and may be either incorrect or out of date.

While we would like searchers to call our customers because they are on the “first page of Google”, we know that searchers are calling people outside of GLBL next to the Google Map because the phone number is written there on the screen. Sometimes without even knowing if they are qualified to handle a customer’s request for a service or product.

GLBL may not even be accurate because the listing is not relevant. For example, if you search for a home builder in your city, you might get back a result that has “Aluminum Siding” listed as a supplier or “Mobile Home” as a sales location. Since they may have listed the word “home” in their listing, they may appear on GLBL.

You should also make sure that when you create your listing, you should list all the places you provide in that area. You can do this in the description box below – you’re also limited to 200 some characters, so keep it brief.
